I’m going to continue on the subject of identity because I believe it is vitally important for us to know who we truly are.
I guess I’m so passionate about this subject because I spent many years of my life having a full-on identity crisis! It stemmed from rejection in my early childhood, and it resulted in me desiring to be a boy instead of a girl – all I can say is that I am so glad that I didn’t grow up in today’s society. Who knows how much more destruction I would have welcomed into my life had I experienced this crisis nowadays?!
My journey of healing is thanks only to God. It has not been easy, I have messed up plenty of times along the way, and I can’t even say that I’m totally ok now … because rejection still rears its ugly head from time to time. But, I’m certainly not where I used to be! And I’m grateful to God for that.
You know, my true identity – and your true identity – is found in the love of God. It’s not found in what other people say or think about you, not in what you have done or haven’t done, and not in your appearance or intellect. Identity is found only in God and His love.
Not too long ago, and over a period of some weeks or months, every time I was at a worship service at church, I felt that God was singing the same words back to me that I was singing to Him. Not words of majesty or glory (cos He alone is majestic and glorious), but words of love and adoration. At first, I wondered if I was wrong to believe that God would do such a thing. After all, I was worshipping Him; I was the one expressing my love for Him in worship. I didn’t know if it was right to think that He was singing to me! Yet, the feeling persisted for quite some time.
Then, when I considered sharing this with you, I was reminded that the Bible says: The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17). God does sing to us!! That’s the way He rejoices over us! He rejoices over us because He loves us so dearly, so unconditionally and so perfectly.
God loves us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3) and His love never fades out or comes to an end (1 Corinthians 13:8, AMP). I find comfort and security knowing that my identity is in His love for me. How about you?
Love you! Alison.
