Freedom Worth Celebrating: Independence Day and Identity in Christ

Every July, families across our nation celebrate the birth of our great country’s independence. It’s a time filled with joy and tradition—BBQs and camping trips, lake outings and fireworks that light up the summer sky. For me, these celebrations hold a special place in my heart, especially those spent in White Sulphur Springs, Montana. In that sweet little town, my family—near and far—comes together for a morning parade (that charmingly loops twice because it’s so small), a community picnic in the park, a street dance, local vendors, and an unforgettable fireworks show to close the evening. It’s more than just a holiday; it’s a beautiful reminder of togetherness, laughter, and the gift of freedom.

Yet as I reflect deeper, another kind of freedom stirs within me—one that transcends flags and fireworks. It’s the freedom I found in Christ.

The day I gave my life to Jesus was the day I was truly set free. The weight I had carried—guilt from past choices, shame from wounds I didn’t cause, bitterness that had hardened my heart—was lifted in an instant. Tears streamed down my face as the grace of God rushed in, and I finally knew: I was forgiven. I was loved. I was free.

As believers, our Independence Day celebration takes on profound meaning. Beyond political liberty, we celebrate the spiritual freedom that only Christ can give. In John 8:32, Jesus says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” And again in verse 36: “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

This truth isn’t just a concept—it’s a Person. Jesus is the truth that sets us free. His perfect life, boundless love, and redeeming power give us the freedom to live as God created us to live: whole, unburdened, and filled with purpose. Because of Him, we can serve without fear, love without conditions, and hope without limits. And we can bear His image!

It’s this freedom we desire that every mama and child who enters the SONshine Home will experience. Our prayer is that each soul who walks through those doors would encounter the grace of Christ and discover the beauty of living fully and freely in Him.

This month, we honor the courageous men and women whose sacrifices have secured our national freedoms. We thank God for the liberty to worship Him, speak truth, and live boldly in faith. I truly believe we live in the greatest country on earth—and for every blessing, including YOU, I am deeply grateful.

Happy Independence Day, dear family and friends. May you celebrate this month with joy, reflect with reverence, and live in the fullness of Christ’s freedom.

Love you, Heather
